Over the past few years a number of American films have tried to invoke the early '70s stylistically while tackling adult or taboo subject matter - I'm thinking of Monster's Ball, In the Bedroom, Blue Car, Edward Norton's Down In The Valley .
Blue Car is terrific, but The King is the one that gets everything right.
